Solar energy has a much lower carbon footprint than fossil fuels as a sustainable energy source. A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane, etc.) that a person, organization, or country releases into the atmosphere. While the combustion of fossil fuels results in a large amount of carbon emissions, solar panels do not directly produce emissions when generating electricity.
